From Poulter Park downstream to Trewint Street in Earlsfield, the Wandle’s surroundings vary widely from the parkland settings of Ravensbury and Morden Hall Parks to highly urbanised and post-industrial landscapes around Colliers Wood and Plough Lane.
When the river’s natural spring flow is low, Beddington Sewage Treatment Works contributes up to 85% of the water in the middle and lower river.
Several large adjustable weirs make fish passage very difficult, but the Wandle Trust is working steadily to fit eel passes to all of these, and create fish passage solutions for other fish species including chub, dace, barbel and roach.
